Whatever Happened to Zulay? An Otavaleña’s Journey is the story of a remarkable Ecuadoran woman who went through several life changes and maintained some continuity in her life, a continuity that made her successful in a new world, and surprisingly, at the same time remain attached to her own traditional one. A film that will appeal to everyone interested in cultural change, gender studies, folklore, ethnicity, Latin American communities, indigeneity, weaving, filmmakers, anthropology, textiles, oral history, folk architecture, and religion. A UO professor of Folklore and English, Sharon Sherman appears along with Zulay in this new documentary, as they both make changes and talk about the project.
Sponsored by the UO Center for the Study of Women in Society and the UO Folklore Program.
- Sharon Sherman’s paper “Whatever Happened to Zulay?” is available online in the Winter 2010 issue of CSWS Research Matters.
