Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Politics
Edited by Lynn Fujiwara and Shireen Roshanravan

(University of Washington Press, Dec. 2018)

From the publisher: Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Politics brings together groundbreaking essays that speak to the relationship between Asian American feminisms, feminist of color work, and transnational feminist scholarship. This collection, featuring work by both senior and rising scholars, considers topics including the politics of visibility, histories of Asian American participation in women of color political formations, accountability for Asian American “settler complicities” and cross-racial solidarities, and Asian American community-based strategies against state violence as shaped by and tied to women of color feminisms. Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Politics provides a deep conceptual intervention into the theoretical underpinnings of Asian American studies; ethnic studies; women’s, gender, and sexual studies; as well as cultural studies in general.

Lynn Fujiwara is associate professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon. She is the author of Mothers without Citizenship: Asian Immigrant Families and the Consequences of Welfare Reform. Shireen Roshanravan is associate professor of American ethnic studies at Kansas State University. She is the coeditor of Speaking Face to Face / Hablando Cara a Cara: The Visionary Philosophy of María Lugones.

_____________

“Maps out an Asian American feminist genealogy that is rooted in women of color feminism as well as a framework for what constitutes Asian American feminist theoretical critique.”
-Robyn Magalit Rodriguez, author of Migrants for Export: How the Philippine State Brokers Labor to the World

“An important assessment of the theoretical and conceptual frameworks within Asian American feminisms that weaves together foundational texts from generations past with contemporary contexts.”
-Lisa Sun-Hee Park, author of Entitled to Nothing: The Struggle for Immigrant Health Care in the Age of Welfare Reform

Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Politics argues compellingly for necessary theoretical and political engagements with practices of dialogue and solidarity, but also with histories of erasure and exclusion, between Asian American feminisms and women of color politics. This is an exciting collection of dynamic and forthright essays grappling with the possibilities, and incommensurabilities, of coalition-making and strategies for creating, sustaining, and sometimes breaking them – and we would do well to listen to its insights.”
-Mimi Thi Nguyen, author of The Gift of Freedom: War, Debt, and Other Refugee Passages

“In Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Politics, Lynn Fujiwara and Shireen Roshanravan establish a critical framework for understanding Asian American feminisms as a field of scholarly, political inquiry that engages the theory and praxis of women of color feminisms. This exciting, groundbreaking collection should be required reading for scholars of Asian American Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies, as well as anyone interested in women of color politics, epistemologies, and coalitions.”
-Patti Duncan, author of Tell This Silence: Asian American Women and the Politics of Speech
